Success rains down for no apparent reason.

Tragedy strikes like a freight train.

We’re left to deal with the results.

We can allow our egos to swell over our sudden good fortune, or we can humbly accept the fruit of our labor and continue to better ourselves.

We can lie down and give up after a tragedy, or we can grieve, get up, and begin taking steps to move on with our lives.

Look at the situations in your life. Have you been given success? Are you learning the lessons of loss?

Perhaps yours is the gift of the ordinary. Don’t walk too boastfully through your successes, nor remain too long in your grief. And don’t sleep through ordinary life. You’ll lose your sense of wonder and awe, and when it ends, you won’t know where you’ve been.

We cannot always control what will happen to us.

We need to let go of any false thoughts that we can.

We can choose how we’ll handle the situation just like we choose how we’ll pick up a knife-by grabbing the handle or the blade.

Watch out for the cutting edge.

What you do with what you have been given is important.

A 10 de Março de 2019, um avião da Ethiopian Airlines despenhou-se logo após a descolagem, matando cento e cinquenta e sete pessoas que se encontravam a bordo e nas horas após o acidente, mesmo antes de as autoridades recuperarem as caixas negras do avião, o mundo começou a questionar a segurança da aeronave. O Boeing 737 Max 8, foi anunciado como o futuro da aviação, graças à sua impressionante economia de combustível e toques futuristas, como música na cabine e nova iluminação LED. É um avião que começa uma nova fase na era da economia de combustível de dois dígitos em relação à geração anterior.

Os dois acidentes com aviões Boeing 737 Max 8 em apenas cinco meses, deixou o mundo consternado pelas consequências de perdas de tantas vidas humanas, e torna-se difícil não pensar a razão pela qual a Boeing resistiu aos esforços de manter os aviões no solo. A Southwest Airlines e a American Airlines, duas companhias aéreas americanas continuaram a voar, até o presidente Trump anunciar que os aviões se manteriam no solo, revertendo uma decisão anterior da Administração Federal de Aviação (FAA na sigla inglesa). A União Europeia (UE), a 12 de Março de 2019, proibiu o uso de aviões Boeing 737 Max 8 e 9, e que voassem no seu espaço aéreo. Os Estados Unidos ainda não tinham tomado qualquer decisão nessa data.

Se fechar os olhos por um momento e escutar o espaço que me rodeia dou conta que da minha cadeira, ouço a agitação rítmica do ciclo de centrifugação da máquina de lavar, abafada apenas levemente por uma porta fechada. Na sala ao lado, ouço uma melodia cadenciada de bandolim. Ainda mais longe, a sugestão de um zumbido baixo, como o de um raro jacto cruzando o céu, que me faz lembrar a presença do frigorífico no espaço contíguo à cozinha. Se eu me concentrar mais, posso ouvir o gemido distante de sopradores de folhas na rua, embora o que poderiam estar a soprar no meio do inverno esteja além de mim.

E ao lado do “click clack” da minha digitação, ao enviar estas palavras à página, está o ronronar de um disco rígido externo, um som reconfortante da era digital. Estes são os sons da minha e da nossa vida diária. Os sons possuem muitas universalizações compartilhadas pelos povos do mundo como lembretes sonoros de electricidade, canalização interna e motor de combustão. No entanto, são simultaneamente e totalmente exclusivos do local onde ocorrem e podem incluir o clamor longínquo de um raro galo ou um chamado árabe à oração. Ao ler a passagem acima, provavelmente ouviu os sons descritos na sua mente, em um processo chamado de audição.

A healthy friend dies participating in a sport she loves. A husband works hard on his marriage only to come home one day and find his wife in bed with another man.

A knock at the door and a starving family opens it to find bags of groceries piled anonymously on the porch. A large order comes in just as a company is getting ready to close its doors, and the owner’s dream is given new life.

Sometimes life twists. Sometimes it goes the other way, too. Things happen. Sometimes we label these events good, sometimes bad. We cannot always see the reason or purpose in them, but most of us choose to believe there’s a Divine plan.

I don’t know why I’ve received some of the blessings I’ve been given; I don’t know why some of the sorrow has come my way. All I can do is trust that whatever comes my way, there’s a lesson at hand. Are you focusing on the circumstances of your life instead of the lessons? The circumstances are the tools. Be involved in them. Feel the pain of loss and the elation of victory. Let compassion works its way into your soul. Learn caring and kindness for others and yourself, too.

Instead of asking why to learn to ask what the lesson is. The moment you become ready to accept it, the lesson will become clear.
